“Tell me About Yourself” Guide + Template + Example

Hello my beloved friends,

Today I want to discuss how to create and deliver a great answer to the “tell me about yourself question in interviews”.

When preparing for job interviews, dedicate time to developing a strong answer to the “tell me about yourself” question. 

This is one of the most important and commonly asked questions in interviews. The answer you give to this question essentially sets the tone and mood for the rest of the interview. The best strategy to answer this question is to prepare answers well in advance and practice it repeatedly. I'll be providing you with a script later in this section to help you come up with a great answer to this question.

Many people struggle and fail to prepare an answer in advance for this question simply because they are unaware of how a great answer should look and what the interviewer wants to know from you. 

In order to prevent yourself from blanking out or rambling on during this question, prepare an answer to the question in advance and practice it repeatedly.

“Absolutely! I have 4 years of hands-on experience in business and sales development, client success and Account management”

Most recently, I have been working as an Insurance Advisor with TD for the last one and a half years.  In this role, I help clients find the right solution when it comes to Home and Auto insurance products TD. It is based on the various assessments and questions I ask from them based on their unique needs. 

Previously to that, I have worked as a Field Sales Specialist for Kognitive Tech for a year and half. In this role, I was responsible for generating field sales for the Mastercard Credit Cards for Canadian Tire company. While working with Kognitive, I also functioned as a training manager for the new hires. We launched a new sales line in Alberta, where I hired 8 new field sales reps for my company and ensured a smooth training and transition process for them. 

I started my career with HDFC Bank, which is one the biggest banks in India. In this role, worked as a Business Loan Officer helping businesses find the right loan for their business and helping them with expanding immediate capital requirements.

So far in my career, I have generated $1.5m in sales and completed over 3000 sales and client calls.

I have been recognized by my leaders and peers for my exceptional performance and my work quality. 

I am a Certified Sales Professional and have completed an Inbound Sales Course from Hubspot.

Here my 4-steps to developing a great answer to the Tell Me About Yourself question:

Step 1: Acknowledge the question and provide quick summary of your work experience

  • Acknowledge the questions by saying sure or absolutely

  • Indicate the number of years you have been working and the areas of expertise you have

I have 4 years of hands-on experience in business and sales development, client success and Account management

Step 2: Give an overview of your 3-4 work experiences

  • Discuss how long you have been in the role

  • Talk about major responsibilities or projects you worked on in the role
